When launching a new website, we want to stay in touch with our visitors. We want to let them know any updates and progress that has been made, and perhaps inform them of the official launch. We don't need a full blown Newsletter management system - just a simple one. That's where Mailist comes into play.

Mailist (v3) is a simple PHP web applications that allows visitors to sign up to receive email notifications.

Mailist has some Ajax under the hood, which makes it possible for a seamless signup process without having to reload the page. It stores emails in a text document that can be downloaded as plain text or csv to Excel.

It has some pretty nifty features like customizable email header/footer, email backup, sent emails, and, obviously, the ability to send an email to the whole list.

Mailist is a simple applications that could be especially helpful when launching a new website and you want to inform visitors when you’re online.

Name and Email. Those are the two most common fields you and I fill out. The goal of any website is to get popular enough to have consistent and active readers. Whether your keeping your fans up to date on the most recent news, or once-a-month newsletters to tell friends about your amazing (probably grossly overexadurated) life, a newsletter application is what you need. And chances are PHPList fits your bill (free!) and your wants (user tracking!).

PHPList is a one-way newsletter management system created with ease and simplicity in mind. It packs a load of features from user click/tracking to multiple templates. PHPList is popular enough to be included in most every web host’s arsenal of Fantastico One-Click installs, and powerful enough to house hundreds of thousands of users.

Organize users into an unlimited amount of lists and create unlimited amount of subscribe pages. Harness the full power of PHPList by editing the config.php file. In there you can set how many emails to send out per hour, or set it to unlimited to really get your servers CPU pumping! I found that sending out a few hundred emails (100-200) every ten or so seconds works best.

While your in the config file don’t forget to enable usertracking. After enabling it in the config file, add “[USERTRACK]” to any email you send out (add it to your template so you don’t have to do it every time). This will track the number of hits each email you send our receieves, the % of emails opened/closed, what links were clicked on and more. The array of features for PHPList is rather long, so feel free to view a complete list here.

In conclusion, PHPList will surely quench your newsletter thirst.
